光と暮らしを、中庭から

岡山県津山市、幹線道路沿いの敷地に建つ住宅。

「利便性の高い場所でありながら、家の中では落ち着いて過ごしたい」

「明るさを確保しながら、外からの視線は気にせず暮らしたい」

相反するように見える二つの要望に対して、中庭を住まいの中心に据えることで、その両立を考えました。建物を中庭を挟んで二つのゾーンに分け、北側にはLDKやピアノ教室など、人を迎え入れるための空間を。南側には寝室など、家族が落ち着いて過ごすための空間を配置しています。玄関から中庭へそのまま抜けられる動線によって、訪れた人が家の中だけでなく、自然と庭へと誘われる。家族だけの場所と、人を迎える場所を明確に分けるのではなく、中庭を介してゆるやかにつなげています。幹線道路に面する側には大きな窓を設けず、上部から光を取り入れるハイサイド窓を採用しました。夏は強い日差しを抑えながら、冬には低い光を室内の奥まで届ける。外に対して閉じながら、光に対しては開く。そうすることで、道路沿いという敷地の条件を制約として捉えるのではなく、この家だけの光と暮らしをつくるための特徴へと変えていきました。家族が暮らす南側の空間には、将来の家族構成の変化にも対応できる余白を残しています。子どもが増えること、家族以外の人が泊まること、将来的な介護など、暮らし方は時間とともに変化していくからです。中庭から入る光は一日を通して室内に穏やかに広がり、夜には庭のやわらかな光が寝室へと入り込む。

この住宅では、決められた暮らし方を建築に当てはめるのではなく、家族の現在とこれからの暮らしを想像しながら、敷地の条件を一つひとつ読み替えていきました。

中庭、光、動線、そして将来の余白。

それぞれが緩やかにつながることで、家族の暮らしが変化しても、その時々の生活を受け止められる住まいを目指しました。

This is a simple dwelling for a single family, consisting of a family zone and a private zone connected by a courtyard. One run of the roofs is raised to allow natural light into the shared spaces while allowing natural ventilation.

Situated in the scenic city of Tsuyama in western japan, the mother of the family wanted a space for a grand piano to offer lessons to local children and a garden for the father to practice his golf swings and invite people for barbecue. They wanted the house to adapt to the family needs centered on the growth of their children.

Timeless

We opted for a very straightforward layout with a shared zone that opens towards the courtyard to the south, allowing natural light and ventilation to permeate the activity spaces. The south facing skylight would bring the winter sun into the space while shielding the sun during summer. These simple maneuvers effectively minimize the need to rely on artificial light and air conditioning during the year. We used economical but classic materials of wood and stucco that would age with grace. The organizational philosophy of synthesizing program with light and ventilation and material choices are based on timeless values of the house.

Timeful

The private zone of the house is organized in a way where the program can adapt to the various anticipated life stages of the family. The main and sub bedrooms shift their modes to accomodate a family bedroom, kids room and for the family to be able to take care of their aging parents. The private zones that adapt and change with time are connected to the family zones via the utility zones featuring the bathrooms, storage and kitchen, which act as a buffer to the family zone.
